A tragic highway crash in Mexico has left at least 11 people dead and dozens more injured after a tourist bus lost control and overturned.

The devastating accident happened on May 1, when the bus — traveling from Jalisco to a recreational destination in Nayarit — suddenly veered off the highway and flipped onto its side near the town of Amatlán de Cañas.

According to officials, six victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Five more later died after being rushed to nearby hospitals, bringing the death toll to 11.

Authorities have begun identifying the victims, naming five of those killed as Margarita Gutiérrez Villegas, Mario Reyna Chávez, Alejandro Lozano Morales, Paola Núñez Flores, and Martha Gutiérrez. Officials say work is ongoing to identify the remaining victims.

At least 31 others were injured in the crash and taken to hospitals across the region. The victims range in age from just 4 years old to 47, highlighting the heartbreaking scope of the tragedy. Many of those involved are believed to be from nearby communities in Nayarit and Jalisco.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene within minutes, with local police, prosecutors, and forensic teams working together to manage the aftermath and assist victims.

Images from the crash site show the bus lying on its side in a muddy hillside, with personal belongings scattered everywhere — hanging from broken windows and strewn across the ground. Investigators were seen combing through the wreckage as the area was sealed off with caution tape.

Authorities in both Nayarit and Jalisco have launched an investigation into what caused the bus to lose control. For now, many questions remain unanswered as families grieve and officials work to piece together exactly what went wrong.
